The WD Ultrastar DC HC550 0F38357 is a 16TB SAS hard drive for data center arrays and storage servers. WD's model number for it is WUH721816AL5204. It spins at 7200 RPM, links at 12Gb/s, and carries a 512MB buffer.
At launch, the HC550 was the first hard drive with energy-assisted recording. It was also the first with a triple-stage actuator. Nine helium-sealed disks sit inside the case. The 16TB size is the middle step of a 14, 16, and 18TB range.
Rotational Vibration Safeguard keeps speed steady when many drives share a chassis. Media Cache Plus helps random writes.

Newer models hold more per bay. If your array already runs 16TB drives, the HC550 keeps spares simple, because every drive matches.
WD lists 5.8 W at idle and 8.8 W when active. Twelve drives idle near 70 W. Noise is 2.0 bels at idle and 3.6 while working. A full pass over 16TB at the rated 262 MB/s takes about 17 hours, and a busy array takes longer.
The 12Gb/s link has spare room, since the drive tops out at 262 MB/s. That room matters most when several drives share one expander lane.
The 16TB SAS drive comes in three versions. 0F38357 has no encryption. It supports overwrite-based Sanitize. 0F38356 is the self-encrypting version. 0F38358 adds FIPS certification. SATA versions use 0F38462 and 0F38461.
SAS models can format to 512, 520, or 528 bytes per sector. Some arrays need those sizes.
The model number WUH721816AL5204 reads easily too. The 16 is the capacity. The 52 marks 512e SAS at 12Gb/s. The final 4 means Base SE, with no encryption.
