The WD Blue SN5000 1TB is an NVMe solid state drive on a small M.2 stick. It runs on a PCIe 4.0 x4 link and uses 3D TLC flash. The M.2 2280 size is 22 mm wide and 80 mm long, and it fits most modern laptops, mini PCs and desktop boards.
Many boards have an M.2 slot, but not all of them take NVMe drives. Look at your board or laptop manual. It should list NVMe, PCIe and the 2280 length. A slot that only takes SATA M.2 drives will not run this one.
Seller listings give up to 5,150 MB/s for sequential reads and 4,900 MB/s for sequential writes. Random speed reaches 730,000 reads and 770,000 writes per second. Those figures need a PCIe 4.0 slot. In a PCIe 3.0 slot, the link caps speed at a lower level.
A review of the drive notes that peak speed relies on host memory buffer support. That feature lets the drive borrow a small slice of system memory in place of carrying its own. Check that your system supports it before you plan the swap.
A 1TB drive holds the operating system, your apps and a large set of files with room to spare. It is a common size for a main drive in a desktop or a laptop. Heavy video work may call for a larger size.
The 1TB size is rated for 600 terabytes written. At 100GB of writes a day, that would take over 16 years to reach. Most home and office users write far less than that.
