The Synology HAT5300-12T is a 12TB enterprise SATA hard drive made for Synology NAS and RackStation systems. It spins at 7200 RPM, has a 256MB buffer, and sits in a helium-sealed case.
Synology rates it for a 2.5 million hour MTTF and 550TB of workload a year. Persistent write cache helps protect data if power cuts out suddenly. Sustained speed tops out near 254 MB/s.
Synology tests these drives in its own systems. It also tunes the firmware for DiskStation Manager (DSM). DSM can update the drive firmware along with the operating system, which saves a maintenance step. Synology claims up to 23% faster sequential reads than similar drives in its NAS lineup.
At 254 MB/s, one full pass over 12TB takes about 13 hours at best. A 12-bay NAS filled with HAT5300-12T drives holds 144TB raw. Synology lists 4.25 W at idle, so that set idles near 51 W.
