The Seagate IronWolf Pro ST20000NE000 is a 20TB NAS hard drive. It spins at 7200 RPM, has a 256MB cache, and uses CMR recording in a helium-sealed case. Seagate lists sustained speed at up to 285 MB/s.
These two share a size, a cache, and a speed rating. The newer NT001 carries a higher workload and reliability rating. Seagate lists both models side by side in one data sheet, so the table below comes straight from Seagate.
| Spec | ST20000NE000 | ST20000NT001 |
|---|---|---|
| Workload rating | 300TB per year | 550TB per year |
| MTBF | 1.2 million hours | 2.5 million hours |
| Drive bays | Up to 24 | Unlimited |
| Cache | 256MB | 256MB |
| Sustained speed | 285 MB/s | 285 MB/s |
Many home and small-office NAS boxes stay well under 300TB of reads and writes a year. For a Plex library, a family archive, or camera footage, the NE000 does the job. Four of these drives in RAID 5 give about 60TB usable. In RAID 6 you get 40TB.
Rotational vibration sensors help it hold speed in a crowded enclosure. AgileArray firmware adds dual-plane balancing and time-limited error recovery for RAID. Seagate lists 20 dBA at idle and 26 dBA while seeking. IronWolf Health Management works on supported NAS systems.
Seagate rates the NE000 for systems of up to 24 bays. Most home and office NAS units have two to eight, so that limit rarely matters. Helium is lighter than air, so it lowers drag on the platters and trims power and heat.
Pick the NT001 if you run a heavy write load or a large bay count.
