The Seagate Exos X22 ST22000NM001E is a 22TB SATA enterprise hard drive. It spins at 7200 RPM, has a 512MB cache, and records with CMR. A helium-filled case keeps power draw and weight down.
Seagate rates it for 550TB of workload a year and a 2.5 million hour MTBF. It idles at about 5.7 W, so twelve of these drives idle near 69 W.
Seagate lists cloud data centers, high-density RAID, Hadoop and Ceph clusters, backup, and video surveillance among its target uses. The drive supports hot-plug, and digital sensors inside it monitor operating conditions.
The ST22000NM001E arrives in 512e mode. Seagate's FastFormat command switches it to 4Kn, and that erases the drive. Align your partitions to 4K to see the gain. This is the standard model. The self-encrypting version is ST22000NM002E.
The SATA model has one port. The SAS version, ST22000NM000E, is dual-port.

SATA. The SAS version of the Exos X22 is ST22000NM000E.
CMR. It avoids the slow rewrite behavior of shingled drives, which matters in RAID and ZFS.
At the rated 285 MB/s, one full pass over 22TB takes about 21 hours. Real rebuilds take longer when the array is busy.
Yes. SAS controllers and backplanes accept SATA drives. The reverse doesn't hold, because a SATA port can't run a SAS drive.
The Exos X24 raises capacity to 24TB under model ST24000NM002H. It shares the 285 MB/s speed, 512MB cache, and 2.5 million hour MTBF. A classic RAID set uses the size of its smallest drive, so keep capacities matched.
No. Some listings mix them up. ST22000NM000C is a separate part number from Seagate's recertified Exos range.
