The Samsung PM1725a 1.6TB is an NVMe solid state drive built as a PCIe add-in card. It is a half-height, half-length card, or HHHL. It plugs into a PCIe Gen3 x8 slot, like a network or RAID card. There is no drive bay or cable.
Reads reach up to 6,200 MB/s and writes reach up to 2,600 MB/s. For small random work, expect up to 1,000,000 reads and 180,000 writes per second. That is far beyond what a SATA drive can do.
The card is rated for 5 drive writes per day over 5 years. On a 1.6TB drive, that is 8TB of new data every day. Tantalum capacitors hold enough energy to move cached data to flash if power fails. The listed mean time between failures is 2,000,000 hours.
A card needs no drive bay, no backplane and no cable. That helps in servers and workstations whose bays are full or have no NVMe support. Modern operating systems include NVMe drivers, so setup is simple. Seat the card, power on and check that the system sees a new NVMe drive.
This card suits databases, caching, analytics and other jobs where low delay matters. For plain file storage, a cheaper SATA drive is enough.
