The Micron 5300 PRO 7.68TB is a SATA solid state drive for servers and storage systems. It is a self-encrypting drive, or SED. It uses 96-layer 3D TLC flash in a 2.5-inch, 7 mm case. The 5300 PRO line is Micron's read intensive family.
A self-encrypting drive scrambles every write on the drive itself. A hardware engine does the work with 256-bit AES, so the host CPU stays free. If a drive leaves your site, the data on it is unreadable without the key.
The listing for this part number says it supports TCG Enterprise, TCG Opal and ATA Security modes. These are the standard ways a host locks and opens an encrypted drive.
Many self-encrypting drives can also wipe fast by changing the key. Check your controller tools for that option before you rely on it.
Pick it if your rules call for encryption of stored data, or if drives are retired or sent back often. Skip it if you do not need encryption. Micron also makes the 5300 PRO without the SED feature, which keeps setup simpler.
Reads reach 540 MB/s and writes reach 520 MB/s on the SATA 6Gb/s link. At 7.68TB, one drive holds as much as two 3.84TB drives. That saves bays in a dense server, and it suits large read heavy data sets such as media, archives and reports.
Stacking flash cells in 96 layers packs more storage into each chip. That is how a 2.5-inch, 7 mm drive reaches 7.68TB. TLC stores three bits per cell, which keeps the cost per terabyte low for read heavy work.
