The EMC X-ES30-4TBS is a 4TB SAS hard drive made for the Dell EMC Data Domain ES30 expansion shelf. It spins at 7200 RPM, links at 6Gb/s, and fits the shelf's 3.5-inch hot-swap bays.
An ES30 is a 3U shelf with 15 drive bays. Earlier SAS shelves came with 2TB or 3TB drives, so 30TB or 45TB per shelf. The 4TB drive lifts one shelf to 60TB of raw space.
| Shelves | Drives | Raw capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 60TB |
| 2 | 30 | 120TB |
| 3 | 45 | 180TB |
| 4 | 60 | 240TB |
Dell lists the 4TB drive for systems such as the DD4500, DD6300, and DD6800. The bays are hot-swap, so a failed drive can come out while the shelf stays powered.
Vendors count TB in decimal, but Data Domain reports TiB. A 60TB shelf is about 54.6 TiB raw.
Raw space isn't what you can use. Dell's guides put an ES30's raw capacity at 125% of its available capacity. They list 43.6 TiB available for a shelf of 4TB drives.
Every Data Domain system has a maximum raw external shelf capacity. It can't go past that limit, no matter how many shelves you add. Check the cap for your model before you plan a build.
Data Domain systems need DD OS 5.7 or later to use 4TB drives. ES30 shelves also need DD OS 5.4 or later. Parts sellers add that these shelves look for drives with EMC firmware. A plain 4TB SAS drive from another brand may not show up, even at the same size and speed.
That firmware is also why this drive belongs in an ES30. Other systems may treat it differently. If a shelf doesn't see a new drive, check the part number first and the DD OS level second.
The drive is SAS at 6Gb/s, and that link moves about 600 MB/s per lane. Keep a spare on hand, because it shortens repair time when a drive fails.
