The Dell 6VJC9 is an 800GB SAS solid state drive for servers. It is a mixed use drive on a 12Gb/s link, with 512e sectors, in a 2.5-inch size on a Dell tray. Inside is a Western Digital Ultrastar DC SS540.

The SS540 line uses a SAS link that runs at 6 or 12Gb/s, with wide port support at 12Gb/s. It comes in a 2.5-inch, 15 mm case. Western Digital rates the family at up to 2.13 GB/s for reads and up to 2.1 GB/s for writes. It reaches up to 470,000 random reads and 240,000 random writes per second. Those are top-end family numbers, so figures for the 800GB size can be lower.
A 512e drive reads and writes in 512-byte blocks for the system, even if the flash uses larger blocks inside. That keeps it compatible with older software and RAID controllers.
Mixed use drives handle reads and writes in a balance. They suit databases, virtual machines and mail servers. For archives that mostly read, a read intensive drive is enough. Match the Dell part number, 6VJC9, before you install.
Pick it if your PowerEdge server has SAS bays and runs databases, virtual machines or mail. Skip it if your bays are SATA only, since SAS drives need a SAS controller. Skip it if you want the lowest cost per terabyte for cold data.
