Dell part T59DD is a 20TB SAS hard drive that arrives mounted in a Dell hot-plug tray. It spins at 7200 RPM, links at 12Gb/s, and fits the 3.5-inch bays in PowerEdge servers. Dell also lists it as 161-BBTX, and labels may print 0T59DD. These names point to one part.
Dell's server configurators offer 12TB, 16TB, 20TB, and 22TB SAS drives in the 3.5-inch size. Raw space adds up like this.
| Drive size | Four bays (R250) | Twelve bays (R760) |
|---|---|---|
| 12TB | 48TB | 144TB |
| 16TB | 64TB | 192TB |
| 20TB (this drive) | 80TB | 240TB |
| 22TB | 88TB | 264TB |
The 20TB size is a middle step. It adds 25% more room per bay than 16TB, and it sits 2TB below the 22TB drive.
Four 20TB drives in RAID 5 give about 60TB usable. RAID 6 or RAID 10 gives 40TB. Twelve drives in RAID 6 leave about 200TB. Reading all 20TB at once takes a day or more under load, so many teams pick RAID 6 or keep a hot spare at this size.
Dell lists its 20TB SAS drive on 15th generation servers such as the R250 and R750xs. Parts sellers also list it for 16th generation models. On a 14th generation server, check Dell's drive list for your exact model first.
The drive needs a SAS-capable backplane and a PERC or HBA card. Plain SATA ports can't run it. A 2.5-inch backplane will not take it either. The 512e format shows 512-byte sectors to the host and keeps 4K sectors inside, which current controllers handle.
Yes. Dell prints a leading zero on many labels. It is one part.
