The Dell 0W9G88 is a 1.6TB SAS solid state drive for servers that write data all day. It is a 2.5-inch drive and comes with a Dell tray. Inside is the Kioxia KPM5XMUG1T60, from the PM5-M series.

Endurance is rated in drive writes per day. This drive is rated for 10. On a 1.6TB drive, that is 16TB of new data every day. Read intensive drives are usually rated near one write per day, so this drive can take about ten times the load.

That makes it a fit for databases, logs, caches and virtual machine hosts. If your server mostly reads, such as an archive, a read intensive drive is the better match.

Speed, links and data safety

The drive moves up to 2,100 MiB/s for both reads and writes. For small 4 KiB random work, it reaches 370,000 reads and 230,000 writes per second in dual-port mode. It runs on a 12Gb/s SAS link and also steps down to 6, 3 and 1.5Gb/s. Power loss protection saves data in flight if power drops.

• The drive is 15 mm thick, so the bay must take 2.5-inch SAS drives of that height.
• It reports 512 and 512e sector sizes.
• Match the part number to your server's drive list. Dell also writes it as W9G88.

Service-ready features

The drive supports dual-port SAS, so two controllers can reach it. It also supports Sanitize Instant Erase, which wipes data fast when you retire the drive. It runs from 0 to 60 degrees C and weighs 130 g at most.

Because this drive is rated for heavy writing, it is more than you need for light file serving. A read intensive drive usually costs less and does that work well.
