The Crosshair IV Formula was ASUS Republic of Gamers' flagship for the golden era of AMD Socket AM3, and it remains one of the most satisfying platforms from that generation to build on today. Built around the AMD 890FX chipset, it pairs support for Phenom II processors, including the six-core X6 models, with a multi-slot PCIe layout made for ATI CrossFireX gaming rigs of its day. SupremeFX 7.1-channel audio, ROG-grade power and cooling design and a full ATX layout made it the board enthusiasts chose when they wanted their AM3 build to be special, and it still turns a period-correct retro rig into something genuinely worth showing off.
This is the board for a period-correct AM3 retro gaming build, a restoration of a Phenom II machine that deserves better than a failed board, or a budget performance project built from the strong secondhand AM3 CPU market. Collectors of the ROG line also prize it as one of the defining AMD boards of its generation, complete with the audio and layout refinements that made the Formula series famous.
The board runs AMD Socket AM3 processors, led by the Phenom II X6 six-core family, with DDR3 memory up to 16GB across four dual-channel slots. Graphics scaling comes through CrossFireX-ready PCIe 2.0 slots, and it pairs naturally with era-appropriate AMD Radeon cards and AM3-era operating system support from Windows through modern Linux retro builds.
Some boards are remembered because they were the best of their moment, and the Crosshair IV Formula is exactly that kind of hardware. With ROG power delivery, 890FX platform muscle, six-core AM3 support and CrossFireX graphics muscle under the hood, it turns a retro AMD build from a nostalgia exercise into a genuinely capable machine.
