A small flash drive sits beside the disks and holds the drive's metadata. That frees space on the platters, so tracks can sit closer together. WD says OptiNAND is not a hybrid design.

Nine helium-sealed disks hold 2.2TB each. Energy-assisted recording and a triple-stage actuator help reach 20TB at low power. The 72 is 7200 RPM, and 20 is the capacity. B is the generation code, and L is the 26.1 mm height. The 52 means 512e SAS at 12Gb/s. The final 4 means Base SE.

The self-encrypting SAS version is WUH722020BL5201, part 0F38651. SATA versions use 0F38755 and 0F38785 for Base SE, and 0F38754 and 0F38784 for self-encrypting.

Older listings often say HGST Ultrastar. Twelve drives idle near 73 W. Noise is 2.0 bels at idle and 3.2 while working.
